Goodbye Lucas!

As most readers of this blog already know, my Lucas passed away last Fri. June 20th is his birthday. He would have been 5 years old. It’s taken a few days to wrap my mind around the idea that he is no longer with us. Right now, I just want to get to the point where thinking about him or looking at pictures of him doesn’t throw me into a fit of tears. Still hard for me to believe he’s really gone. Not having grown up with any animals, this is like a sucker punch to my heart.

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that Lucas is big goofball. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but the sweetest. He was a notorious momma’s boy. He was usually stuck to his momma’s hip. He had three beloved stuffies. He moved from his big green turtle, to the giant hedgehog, and his last favorite was the giant warthog. Not much of a retriever, but he loved to run around the yard with his stuffies.

There was just something about his big blocky head and thick neck. Just right for giving nose rubs and neck hugs. Not very aerodynamic. That’s probably why he never made it past his maiden races. That just meant that we got to have him for a bit longer.

We had so many names for him. Here are just a few: Luke, Big Luke, Lucas, Knucklehead, Chucklehead, Lukie Pookie, Pookie, Lucasaurus, Lulu, Big Dink, Dinkasaurus, Pony, My Little Pony, Big Goon, Goofball, Luca Brasi (think ‘The Godfather’) and a few I’m probably forgetting.

He showed us why we will always have to have a big goofy boy in our family. Such a lovebug. We will miss you Lucas.

And here is one last Roo!

  1. Whether at a Meet & Greet, carwash, parade,or any other excuse for greyhounds to get together, look around and you'd see Lucas.
Maybe he danced to a different drummer and then maybe that's what made him Lucas. His sudden loss defies my grasp for appropriate words. He was your dog but he reached the hearts of many. Be patient big fellow, we will see you again.

  2. thank you for letting us see him again. that last roo made me laugh and then cry.

it will hurt for a long time and let it. and when you read a blog like this 9 months later, you'll be weepy again. so be it. it's good to feel sad when you lose something that took so much space in your heart.

he was a lovely dog. i love the ones that look like the froth of a cappucino.

take care of yourself, K and the furkids.

we're thinking of you here in oz.

  3. What a beuatiful tribute. He really did reach the hearts of so many including us in Oz.
When I lost my first hound I thought that I would never stop crying. But now I am so glad that I have such wonderful memories.

Farwell Roar Lucas, such a gorgeous goofy hound.

  4. We'll all miss him. He was my girls fave hound :)As gpaw51 said there are no words. But know that you all are in our thoughts.

  5. Ah man, it just sucks. Just plain sucks and hurts. There will come a time when thinking about him won't feel so raw but the hurt never really, truly goes away completely. My condolences.

  6. This will take a long time to get over but you are surrounded by friends. We all loved him. I am glad I could be his surrogate mommy when you weren't available.

  7. Take comfort in the joy Lucas brought wherever he went, and know that we all will continue to carry our love for Lucas in our hearts for the rest of our lives. It is because of greyhounds like him that we will continue our endeavors, so know that his time with all of us truly has been meaningful. I wish we could have been there in body for you, but know we were there for you in spirit, as Lucas is right now.

  8. Happy Birthday Lucas. We will never forget all the love and joy you gave so easily. You brought so much happiness to many, many people. Our hearts are just broken without you here. We all miss you. Thank you Lukie for being our special, goofy, loving, tail always wagging, big boy. I love you!

  9. You know, when you lose a loved one, whether two-legged or four, we try to grasp for words of wisdom and comfort, but the bottom line is, it stinks! Although all of Lucas' friends, grey, human and otherwise, will miss him dearly, none more so than his forever family. You were blessed to have found each other! Happy Birthday Lucas. Your time here was much too brief...

  10. I am so sorry for your loss. What a lovely tribute to a lovely boy.

  11. I do feel for you - as the mother of seven kitties myself... I'm so sorry he's gone.

    Have you seen this movie?
http://www.thelightbeyond.com/movie.html I created it for my mother, but it applies just as well to our beloved pets.
