Picking Corn

Corn picking. Not the yummy variety. We have been watching Sabrina for years. And she has the most corns of any greyhound I know.
Sabrina: Oh woe is me. It’s torture I tell you.
Corn in hand.
Going in with the corn tool.
Scooping it out.
A good 1/4 inch big.
I didn’t get a picture of the divot left in her pad, because she immediately ran over to find comfort in snuggling with Kevin. He’s a great listener.

  1. I have never heard of a dog getting corns before. Is this a greyhound thing? Will it come back eventually or is it gone for good now?
Hope Sabrina got a nice cuddle from Kevin.

  2. Corns are a greyhound only quirk as far as I know. They come back unless you have surgery down to the bone which is quite painful.

  5. THAT'S what a corn looks like? How can you tell the difference between a corn and a callus? I have a feeling someone here might have some. Now I'm feeling a little paranoid. Do they feel different from the rest of the pad? I picked at a little bit of it with my thumbnail and some of it came off, and she didn't seem bothered by it at all.

  6. Henry and Sabrina must have similar 'genes'. He has them on 3 feet and one is that big. He feels her pain.

  7. I am going to have to take a photo of Joey's. It doesn't look like that to me. It is really small and doesn't seem to have come to the surface, but I could be wrong. :::sigh:::

  9. Our Sabrina had one recurring corn that I removed a couple of times. Apollo has one that comes, I pop it out, he's okay for a few months, then it comes back. And now Ava, too. http://terriknits.wordpress.com/2012/01/29/corn-dog/ I don't have the corn huller tool (should get one, though - where?) but I've been able to remove them myself.

  10. Knock on wood... I am so thankful to have never dealt with corns and hope I never have to. At the recent GPA convention, Dr. Rob Gillette from Auburn mentioned they recently had some good success with dealing with corns by removing it all they way down to the bone. Takes a little longer to heal, but so far they have not come back.

  11. Poor baby. My mom's grey gets corns. They use the old duct tape trick which seems to work. Thanks for sharing this info with us!

  12. We've done the laser surgery with limited success. It took 2x on each back foot. One is totally gone and the other is a lot smaller and much more manageable. Her front feet are a different story. I dread going in to do her front feet, but it looks like we will have to eventually as one of them makes that 1/4 in you show look like a tiny pebble. Stupid corns.

  13. Omo's corns are back. Or, rather, he has new ones on different pads. His are NOT that bad. Poor girl. I don't think the vets here are grey savvy enough to use them for solutions. There are greyhound vets, but they're often for the racing ones and often embrace the "if it's broken, euthanise" mentality. And they're in the country. We don't have enough as pets all over to have that many vets who know all the tricks. BUT ... all the vets know them well enough to love them. They don't know all the ins and outs.

I use pawpaw salve to soften the paw and I go from there. Pawpaw salve is very popular here. My dogs get it. I use it. I've put a car together with it.

  14. Ouch, poor Sabrina:( I hope Beryl never gets corns because I'm sure I wouldn't be able to remove them, I can't even cut her toenails for fear of hurting her! At least Sabrina has got Kevin there for comfort. Does she stay away from you for a while after you've removed the corn?
